I have four female bettas, one of which is a fancy Thai, and I'd like to put them in my community tank, but every time I try, they fight viciously and I have to quarantine them again after less than an hour. What can I do to improve this situation? It it impossible for them to co-exist? We tried letting them duke it out a bit, since I read that they have to establish a pecking order, but it got really nasty, and we had to seperate them before someone got seriously injured or killed. Any advice??

If it's that bad, don't try it. Sometimes it just plain doesn't work. If you found the most aggressive one and replaced her with a different female (just keeping the aggressive one solitary) it could possibly work. Still no guarantees though.

We've tried that, still with no results. Out of the four, three of them are very aggressive.. I guess maybe it just won't work.

so why not just have one of them in your community tank? i found that my red female (rip) was very aggressive when housed with my other girls, but when she was the only betta in my community tank she did just fine.

If your tank is heavily planted, it could work since the weaker ones will have an opportunity to hide or escape in case the aggressor beats them up constantly but I find it unusual your females would reach the peak of temperament matching the males. Then again, this is down to personalities but usually females are more mild mannered than males.

Usually... but not always.

I once bought 4 females for a heavily planted 45 gallon tank. I had to shuffle a couple of them around because they just wouldn't get along. Sometimes it just doesn't work out... those little girls can be downright nasty!
