My local Pet Store said these snails are now illegal to own. Is this accurate?

Not unless there was some super-secret press release about some new law that nobody voted in.

MAYBE a local law?

It depends upon what state you live in, but it's possible. I'm in WI and have no problem getting them. I'm sure others would attest to that as well.

Also, if some local law got passed that made them illegal to OWN, you would have heard about it, because if you had one, you'd have to 'turn it in'.

Whew, thanks. Mine had babies (I missed an egg sac) and I have about 40 babies and I thought Apple and Mystery snails were the same and the Pet Store said they wouldnt take them because I called them Apple Snails but now I know she is a Golden Mystery Snail. I bought her from this Pet Store so they are going to take the babies now. I didnt know what I was going to do with 40 baby snails. Thanks soooo much!

Mystery and apple is used to describe many types of snail--but the most common is Pomacea diffusa which is still legal to own and trade in all states as far as I amd aware. Many other plant eating snails are considered invassive and cannot be traded between states, but can still be owned in most.

Depends on the intent of the snail as to it's legality. Just like it is illegal to own a dog for dog-fighting purposes.

In some backwards areas people will put two snails into an aquarium and taunt the snails with jibes about how easy their mothers were and how many eggs they laid all over the place.

Crowds of people will them gamble, drink, and chant "Jerry... Jerry... Jerry..." whilst waiting for the snails to fight.

These snails arn't like your typical snails though- they've been bred and trained from an early age to be vicious- brutal and murderous... occasionally one will even approach the other for reasons other than to mate.

The last snail to die is considered the winner- and the frantic crowds will then settle their gambling debts and dispurse before the police arrive.
