New Ackies!!!

Just thought I'd share some photos of my new juvenile Varanus acanthurus brachyurus pair I just got in the mail this morning. I've always loved monitor lizards and I've wanted a pair of this species for a while now so I'm really excited about getting them. They've settled in quickly and were already eating crickets after being in their new enclosure for 5 minutes. The male is about 6 weeks old and the female 4. Within 10 or so months I should get my first clutch of eggs! :D

Right now they're in a 50 gallon breeder. I'll keep them in that for a few months and then I plan on building them a much larger custom enclosure.

I would have loved to afford a trio but I'm pretty broke. I probably shouldn't have even bought these 2, lol.

Thanks and I'm way ahead of you. I have a 1,500+ dubia colony going. They each eat about 7-10 roaches a day. I'm still working on pinkies.

Today I had to clean out my ackie's tank so I decided to let them soak in a tub of water while I did that. This is also the first time I've really held them since I got them last month and they've become extremely trusting in me. They were very well behaved which I was happy to see. Enjoy the pics!

Thanks. My goal for all my setups is to make them seem as natural as possible. It's the least we can do as the keeper and it's great to watch them act out their natural instincts like climbing, digging, basking, etc...

Varanus acanthurus brachyurus are considered a dwarf monitor species and they get between 18-24" inches when they reach adult sized. Males grow larger than the females as well.
