I was hoping to give my common(Lorraine) and shubunkin(Shubunky-boo-boo) a nice 100 gal or so stock tank(or something similar) to spend the rest of the summer in, then move it to my stoarge/furnace room to winter. I was just wandering around Petsmart today wondering if I had the guts to buy a brand new tank(for another plan of mine) when I happened onto the pond supplies. Clearance tags ALWAYS catch my eye and in a fish store, watch out. So I got a Pondmaster 1500 garden pond filter system for $69.99 marked down from $159.99. ALL of their pond filters and pumps are on sale, FYI, and this seemed like a good deal.

So now all I need to do is get a container (100 gal - 150ish gal) to put the big guys into. It will need to be something that I can move into the basement before it freezes so that's why I was kinda thinking of a stock tank. I found a 100 gal stock tank for $52-something and a 145 gal preformed pond thing for $67-something. Now that it's actually something that is going to happen, my plans are slowly getting wilder and 100 gal doesn't seem to be enough. 200? I dunno. I love these fish. It's sick. :screwy:

I'm wondering if the pump is too strong for just 100 gallons and will create a whirlpool-type situation?? It's rated for up to 1000 gal, but we all know how that goes.

No, I have not tested it. Should I try it in the bathtub? I don't have the stock tank/pond liner I plan to use the pump with yet. I can always return it if it doesn't work appropriately. So, if it pulls in water too fast in the bathtub, should I figure it won't work for a 100-200 gal tank?

I don't have any input on the pump, but as for tank size, go as big as you can get through the door for the winter!

Well, my deal with pumps is that if it creates a rather powerful whirlpool effect to the point that the fish gets thrown around, then I simply reject that particular pump and go for smaller ones.

Commons and shubunkins should be quite tolerant of water movement, but if it turned out to be a problem you could still diffuse the output with a different nozzle or a spraybar.
