Finally- 5 months after getting ghost shrimp despite having constantly berried females I see my first baby ghost shrimp. Two of them right next to each other on some star grass... although if there are two there has to be more.

Tiny little things- less than a cm long. Hope they don't become fish food.

Couldn't get a photo I was running latish plus they were located at the back of the tank.

Why did I get eggs hatch to larvae and then to babies this time and not before?

The trick? Well, I can only speculate... but... I have naturally soft and slightly acidic water so I always add baking soda and liquid calcium to raise the KH, GH, and pH.

Early on during my water change last Saturday I ran out of liquid calcium and the stuff I ordered to replace it is still in the mail... knowing it's not the same thing- but at the same time wanting to compensate a little- I added a little extra baking soda to raise the dissolved solids in the water and raise the pH. I also threw a couple of extra crushed up PoP blocks in to help compensate lack of calcium.

That seemed to do the trick. Normally to get things where I want them (GH 7 or 8/KH 7 or 8/pH7.5 - higher is better but I've been trying not to change my water from what it naturally is too much) I added 1.5 tsp per 10 gallons of water changed instead of 1tsp... I only changed 1/3 of the tank water though this last time so the change isn't THAT dramatic.

Don't know if that's what did the trick... but for anyone trying to get ghost shrimp babies- they seem berried but not producing young- try upping the hardness of your water.

Hopefully by upping the baking soda I add at each water change I can continue to have little babies.

(BTW- I'm not recommending people just throw the stuff in their tank- especially if they don't have soft water that is naturally too soft for most inverts to begin with like I do)

Interesting post! I've decided I need to up my hardness for my snail tank, which also happens to be my RCS tank, which now (yay!) has berried females. I was debating whether to get liquid calcium, I think I'll try the baking soda.

Where did you get the PoP blocks, and what kind are they?

PoP= Plaster of Paris I just mix plaster of paris, garlic and fish food so that my snails can graze on it to get more calcium... it also slowly dissolves to increase the calcium content in the water.

I got my PoP out of my kids craft cabinet- I think it was originally from Michaels- although Home Depot sells it. Avoid anti-fungal.

Regarding liquid calcium- I've been using Kent's Marine- and it's been great... problem is it costs $9+ for a 250ml bottle at Petsmart.

I notice Brightwell Aquatics have a product called Calcion which appears to be the same ingredients as Kent's available for $9 for a 500ml bottle online at Aquacave... and since I needed Seachem Prime as well- I went ahead and ordered a 500ml bottle of both.

I like Aquacave because they have cheap shipping- $4.95 anywhere in the country- (free if you spend a certain amount).

Regarding Liquid Calcium vs Baking Soda- they actually do two different things. Liquid Calcium will up your GH and to a lesser degree your KH.

Baking Soda will up you KH AND pH.

Both can make quite a lot of change really quickly- so you have to be very carefull.

Both needs to be mixed well with water before being added to the tank or they can hurt your livestock.

If you mix liquid calcium and baking soda directly together without diluting it- it starts bubbling like mad producing CO2 and calcium carbonate.

Most likely, this is the first time you've seen babies, cause it's the first time you've noticed them before they were adults or fish food... juvie shrimp either hide really well, or get eaten.

Maybe... I KEEP seeing them now though. Everytime I look in the tank I see them... unless it's just I know what I'm looknig for now. I do have to hunt for them though.

Hmmm...I never added garlic on my pucks and the snails ate them right away.

I'm sure they would... I know snails are attracted to the smell of garlic- so I add it just as an extra treat for them.
