Down in Honolulu, looking at fish as always, I saw discus! Now, they were in a tank, (tiny, 5g) some were in really bad shape, marked 10$. There were some of the same size for 16.99, I talked to the guy for about 10 minutes. And he said that they had been there a month and really needed them gone. I told him i could take them off his hands, but not for 16.99, since they had been in the dirty tank for so long. So I talked them down to 10$ each. I got 3 this time, and will be going back for 2 to 3 more on payday. I re homed some of my fish, all my water perm was good. So I am gonna take this as a learning experience! I have been reading about them alot lately, so hope it goes well!
They also had peacock gudgeons for 6 bucks.....

Looks like 2.5", and a little on the stunted side. There's also a chip on the Blue Turq's eye. For the price, it's definately something to learn and gain some experience on.
Good luck with them!

I was thinking they were a bit stunted also, judging by the size of the eye compared to the body. I had a stunted Blue Diamond.. Awesome fish though.
Good luck with them, discus are great fish!

Is the "chip" whats giving him the "you lookin' at me" attitude? I just thought he was pissed from being in a 5 gal!!

that is a good way to gain some experience with Discus.. and nice rescue.
you should QT them for 3-4 weeks..
.
;)
keep the water clean and feed a lot . they do appear to be showing signs of stunting... I look more at the slope of the head. there should not be a slope.
but they are young and you can help to alleviate some of this.
remember to keep the water warm and aerated .
of course with feeding them a lot comes clean up..you'll see they will waste some food as well as poo :hitting:
daily water changes will be part of your interaction with these.
BTW, I think with all the interaction time I spent with mine.. they know who I am and eagerly feed out of my hand.
I think you'll enjoy these babies..
I think on a personal level these fish lucked out when you walked in the the store. they are now in the hands of a pair of good fish keepers.

At 2" they are too young to tell for certain that they will in fact be stunted. Yes, they definately look rough, but I've helped out some military folks with fish like these in the past that were going on deployment. Basically, I took fish that looked very similar to these AND were nearly a year old and, with a little TLC, god food and clean water, they didn't recognize their fish when they got back. Needless to say, they were thrilled! You may have some beautiful fish by the time they're adults! Thy'll likely not win any awards, but that's not your goal to begin with. I wish you all the best with them!
Best wishes!

Good save! Like others have said lots of food & daily water changes will make a big difference. I have 2 inchers too & they only took a week or so to take frozen bloodworm & flake from my hand. Good luck!

Yeah they eat like cows, and the daily water changes are gonna be hard with the hubby leaving, (I got a messed up shoulder and can not even pick up my baby) But I gotta do it now.....
Thanks everyone!!!

In the long run, you'll probably want 8 or 9 of them in a 90+ gallon tank...
Got a python?

I dont have a python..yet. I am going back to get 2 more today, and I want this 150 I saw on craigslist the other day, only 300 for tank and stand, hood and all..... It would be a great discus tank

I've done the LFS discus rescue before! I've had stunted fish that got up to around 4.5" total length and 'rounded' up OK after awhile. Good luck on those!

Thanks all, I have been feeding them blood worms, and now beef heart and brine shrimp. As well as some crappy food, I didn't realize it was fish meal. Beef heart says it help fish grow, it that BS? And will stuff like excel harm them?

It's been a while, how are the fishies doing?
I got 4 LFS discus, for not quite as good a deal as you got. 1 died after about a week, but the other three are great. The runt of the bunch stayed really skinny, and I was afraid I would lose him, but after about 3 months he is filling out and looking good.
The largest of the group has at least doubled in size in the last 4-5 months, and is beautiful.
Again I hope yours are doing well, and I love the nice yellow colors on them!
