Ok, so I know many members here have other pets besides fish...a guy I work with has a brother who wants to give away 2 baby finches. I said I would take them, well in the end I geuss I am ending up with the mom, dad and 2 babies. I dont' know what color they are, what type or anything (yes..I know I should know these things first) but well...I'm a sucker I can't help it they needed a home and I am going to give it to them. I am getting them all, wth the cage and food and everything. I will have to get a bigger cage this is the only thing I know.

So my question is even though I'm not sure the type yet (I will get them Sunday night or Monday) when I am off work and know more....does anyone know anything about them??????? Any special things I should know, food...habits...personalities??

Thanks all, in advance!!!!!!!!

Start there, keep reading :D Finches are relatively easy to care for, the basics are simple, and please do them a favor and do not allow them to rear any more chicks. It is as easy as removing any eggs and not providing a nest.

Yes remove all eggs, they multiply like rabbits. They are most likely Zebra Finch, they are the most common and easiest to raise. They come in brown and a white variety, the makes have orange cheeks spots. They are very easy to keep but the beep beep beep noise drives some people insane lol. Never bothered me but I have had people come in my home and after 5 minutes ask me how I can stand that.

Thanks for the link Kyryah!! I will check it out.

So...I am only going to get the mom and the dad now, a neighbor of his is taking the babies. Which of course is fine with me, especially since I've never kept birds before. I did find out they are Zebra finch..the female is white an the male is brown. I have no pictures yet, since I don't have them but as soon as I can I will post some up.

Not that I would want them to have babies anytime soon, but why would it be bad to let them?

Thank you all for your help!!!!!!!!!!

It is not bad to let them have more babies as long as you are willing to keep and care for them. It's just another one of those breeding more animals when there are plenty in shelters that need homes things.

I'm sure they will be in a much better home once you have them. Good luck and let us know how things go!

my neighbour has a lil zebra finch that i care for when he goes out of town. Buster loves those straw strand bird toys, and mirrors! sometimes i wonder if he's just a lil vain....lol.

make sure you have a cuttlebone or two in there for them to peck at, and a container of water in the bottom that gets changed daily, finches like their baths. a good finch seed and spray millet for their staple food, and treats appropriate for birds. apple slices are ok too, and i think you can feed other fruits and veggies, but i havn't researched too much into it.

i see these featherkids getting spoiled rotten in your house Lady G, i sure do!

I did ponder the potential irony, if Lady G ends up with Lady Gouldian Finches, lol!

Thanks BFM!

HA, that would of been funny Kyryah!!! OMG...I LOVE their look!!!!!

So I ended up with all 4!! The cage is VERY small, so I am looking at cages to buy for them. First thing I took out the "nest" since I read they pretty much only breed with a nest. It said they will still lay eggs but the only time they actually "breed" is if there is a nest provided. OMG, I felt just terrible there were 12 eggs in there!

Anyhow, my question now that I am looking at cages.....would longer or taller be better for them???
