Jurupari are very cool cichlids. Although, they do dig in the gravel quite a bit and will reach about 24cm. So, they will need a larger aquarium eventually.
Their color is not very interesting, but their shape is unusual. They always look kind of intelligent to me.
that is one goofy looking fish you have as your avator lol thanks
wow funny you should be asking this. i had a couple jurupari in a 55 but the bigger was always attacking the smaller so i moved the smaller one into the 29 gal planted aquarium which happens to hold a trio of apisto cacatoo (see tank change safty thread).
i was worried that the jurupari might go to town on the other fish but that hasnt been the case at all. the male apisto is so set in his territory that he defends it against the larger fish, constantly pushing him around. i do not plan on leaving the jurupari in there long because i think if he were bigger he could decide to beat the hell out of the apisto and possobly eat his smaller tankmates. he will also get up to 10" which a 29 gal wouldnt be enough for him alone. im sure there are smaller geo type fish that would go fine in a 30 with a ram. mabye gymnogeophagus labiatus. neat looking pretty little guys.

is it really a geophagus or something else? can't ever keep those names straight...
seems it was a geophagus then they switched it to satanoperca or somthing like that. and as an update: i need to move the jurupari soon as now not only is the male apisto chasing him the females have decided to also. i dont want the jurupari in there when he realizes hes abouth 3 times as big as the females and doesnt have to be bullied.

found this site while looking around. turns out one of my jurupari is actually a leucosticta "gold spot". i was wondering why one was really dark and the other was really colorfull. i should go work at the LFS, at least i would try and figuree out what the fish actually are.
