I have 3 Metaframe three gallons that I was recently given. How can I light these effectively enough to grow plants in them?

the spiral florescent bulbs rated for 6500K work, you can get them in wallmart, lows, homedepo ect. i just gutted the hood i had and installed to of them into it and hung t above the tank (also a an old metal frame tank about 3 to 4 gallons).

Thanks for the ideas! Hopefully my metalworking skills will come in handy with this project.

I have a 5 gallon Metaframe I'm working on. I just ordered some rare earth magnets and I'm going to line them up around the top and try resting a piece of glass over it. If it feels like it can hold the weight I'm going to try to use a regular light strip. If that doesn't work I'm going to buy a Coralife (http://www.marinedepot.com/ps_ViewItem.aspx?category=Coralife_Aqualight_Power _Compact_Fixture_With_Dual_Lamps_12_Inch_Power_Com pact_Light_Fixtures&vendor=Coralife&idProduct=ES53124&idCategory=FILTFIPCTI) and legs.

if you can build a hood you can use LED's.
