hi, i keep fresh water tanks with african cichlids and discus and want to do a salt. i wil use my 10 gallon after i sell the convicts in it. I want a pair of clown fish and either, coral, live rock or an anenome, which i prefer. Wil this fit in a 10 gallon? and how should i set it up? what type of lights should i have? The hood on it is fit for a 29 gallon. Please tell em the supplies i should get. please help thanks.

10 gallon saltwater tanks , are harder to maintain than a 30 gallon salt tank
i would advise u to get a mininium 20 gallon tank for saltwater
so u can less worry about daily water maintence
pair of fales percula clowns would be a good start or tomato clowns
dont get marroon clowns, very aggressive to other clowns
start off wit live rock and work ur way up from there
if u want to go wit a 10 gallon tank, 2 15 watt strips would be good enough to grow mostly anything u want
but than again u have to worry about the water evaporation which leads to higher salinty levels which can put alot of stress on certain fish
i have a 20 gallon long saltwater tank and doin a 125 gallon long reef tank after the new years,
make sure u get some live rock, and let it cycle for a good few weeks before any $$ fish in there

Welcome to Aquaria Central. Grandmastr-we posted at same time, so this is semi a repeat but NO Tomato Clowns. They get huge (close to the Maroon size) and are extremely mean. Only Occelaris or Percula Clowns for that size tank. I highly suggest trying to do a bigger tank as a first tank because small tanks are MUCH harder than large ones. Even a 29 gallon would be much better. But if the 10 is all you have then you will have to be prepared to do daily top offs and weekly water changes due to the small water volume. A single clown would be better in a 10 gallon as they will reach around 3 inches but you could do a pair but no more fish than a pair. In a 10 gallon you could do an anemone but not an anemone and corals, there is not enough room, and an anemone would be better because Clowns have a tendency to host in corals which can kill them. BUT in order to keep an anemone you will need 3-4 watts of light per gallon which can be achieved by using Power Compact Lighting. It is expensive and if you can't afford it I would just do a tank of live rock and the Clowns and maybe some mushrooms cause Anemones and corals really need more light. I would buy 10-20lbs of live rock. For the tank you will need
Some sand for substrate
heater
Filter (Penguins work well)
Hydrometer (to measure salinity)
Test Kit
Salt (obviously but NO table salt)
And that should be about all you will need to set up
You should first put live rock in the tank along with the sand, filter and heater. Then add 2 small cocktail shrimp from grocery store and let it sit for a month then go ahead and add the clowns and whatever else you decide to get. Anyway, hope this helps and good luck.
