I am going to be doing some MS Access work for a former employer, and he is asking me how much it will cost to do the work. Problem is, I have no idea how much I should charge.

I also don't really know if it would be better to give him an hourly rate (which would mean I then need to keep track of the hours I work) or just give a total figure. To be honest I would be happy not charging him at all, while he is my former employer he is also a friend, but insists on paying me.

So, any ideas on what I should charge? if it helps the work involved is updating an Access database to use Google Maps, embedded jpegs, possibly moving to MySQL type of work.

Thanks.

Estimate the time needed and base a price from that. For the work I can still do I charge a flat rate based upon what it should take, not what I actually spend on it. I also limit my customers to the ones I did major business with before disability set in. I estimate at a rate of $50 an hour which is half of the current shop rate in our area.

For those that insist on paying, I feel half of shop rate is very fair.

I charged my mothers work place $25/hour to work on their computers.

Go for it!

I work for a computer company. We charge anywhere from $150-200 an hour for what we do.
