is it ok to turn on my protein skimmer during the cycle to try and save some stuff on the LR.the acclimation guide that came with my LR says its ok if its a new tank and im curing.

Yep, running the skimmer and water changes are both fine for cycling rock, and all the critters in the rock will benefit.
