Photoshop experts in here please

I am working on a picture for my g/f and all I have is GIMP 2.6. I do not have photoshop. i have two pics that I layered together, and removed the background. but now I need help cleaning up the edges because of the nasty artifacts it left.
I have the image saved in a gimp format and a jpg. someone think they can help me with this please.

its great as I figured... check out my attempt I cooled down enough to try a black bg for myself... still working on it a little.
