I am looking for tall plants to put in the aquarium that I will be setting up soon. I want to create a densely planted forest area occupying 70% of the back 3" of the tank. It would be nice if I could find something that looked like bamboo but I know that bamboo is not a true aquatic plant.

I want to find plants that look very tree-like and to be planted about 1-1.5 cm apart. I need them to be rooted. The tank will have a volcano in the back left hand corner, will have the "forest" occupying the back middle of the tank, a "river" diagonally from back to front (glass plate with air bubbling under it) and a bridge crossing it, then medium and small plants and ground cover towards the front. I have some ornaments that look like homes in a Chinese village. Yes, I know, there are not many volcanoes in China, though there are some...I have thought about imitating the shape of the mountains found in eastern China - very tall, odd shapes and extend above the cloud line in most places. But I am looking around for the tall "tree like" plants now. They are going to be the first plants in the aquarium. I will put a couple of maintenance fish in with them to let the tank cycle and keep the snails at bay - if there any. Any suggestions? Am I better off with root plants or stem plants with this kind of height? I am hoping the tank will be about 24" tall but I have not finalized that yet.

This is an example of what I am talking about when I say "tree-like". http://www.aquahobby.com/garden/e_ambulia.php

Red-Devil.
The "frilly" plants that you would like, Limnophila, Cambomba, ect (IMO) needs a lot of light. Hygro and giant hygro maybe better, but are more "Leafy" (see above pic). If you just want tall "grass-like" plants val and sag would be better.

PS--Are you back in Sacto or still in Tianjin??

I've grown cabomba well under 2 wpg and not much else. Limnos seem to be less demanding.
