Picked up a Fluval 304 for VERY ($55, new) cheap and was wondering what the best media combo for it was. It came with Carbon, the BioMedia tube things, and the sponges. I'm pretty sure you have to use the sponges, but what should I out in the other media compartments?

Along with the sponges, I use the ceramic rings in the bottom tray, BioMax in the middle trays, peat granuales and filter floss in the top tray. I don't use carbon at all.

You don't have to use the sponges. I use fluff(polyester fiber batting from a craft store) in my Rena filster. It works great and it is very cheap. I would use that and bio balls in your filter.
