I played WoW for a few months... got to lvl 80 in a month and did some raiding and found that the game sucked compared to FFXI. In my opinion the average quality of players isn't that good, even in "good" guilds because everything is nothing more than a gearfest.
I think the problem stems from the fact that its way too easy to level and get end-game equipment. It doesn't take too long to get respectable gear, and afterwards players get into an epeen frenzy and sabotage raids because they don't care anymore.
One good thing is that there were relatively few RMT's, probably because its so easy to get money that its not worth the RMT's time. FFXI had lots of RMT because it was very difficult to get currency. WoW lasted longer than Guild Wars for me, max level in a week and quit two weeks afterwards...
I'm still waiting for the next big Japanese MMO that I can play a few years, not just a couple of months. Maybe if they made a Dragonquest MMO...

I hear yas Red. I have been a gamer for a long time. I have played various games. Beta'd a few. Usually what gets me hooked on a game isn't the actual gameplay itself, it is usually friends I make in the game. I end up logging in and screwing around with them for hours on end. Like trying to stealth into Org as a lvl 40 druid only to be killed by the guards. LOL I really miss this game I used to play back in the day called Asheron's Call. Now that was a game in its day. Star Wars Galaxies was a good game until they nerfed it and made getting a jedi too easy. :P Guild Wars is a laugh. I only played that when WoW was down for matinence. I tried Lineage 2. Beautiful graphics. Crap gameplay. I wanted to try Vanguard or LOTR Online, but I heard through the grapevine that they weren't worth wasting money on.

I've been a Blizzard game fan essentially all my life. Played Diablo 1 for about a year, then got hooked on Starcraft. When Diablo II came out I played that for almost 5 years until WoW got released... and I've been playing that ever since. Yes, there have been many many other games in between, but none were played nearly as much as the Blizzard games. They really make the best, and I can't wait till Diablo 3 comes out so I can move onto that and stop paying $12.99 a month for WoW.

my bf plays. he's a lvl 70 warrior elf. personally i hate the game. these games are addictive. people go on them for hours at a time. it makes them lazy and they miss out on LIFE in the real world. plus the monthly fee to play pisses me off. it's small i know but i already payed for the game so why should i have to pay to use it? these companies are like drug dealers, making an addictive product and charging you to use it, then they reward you with worthless armor and equipment to make you feel like you are accomplishing something. but your not because it's not real

sorry but I disagree...its up to YOU to make it addicting or not...I use to have over 20 video game consoles with well over 1,000 games total and never got addicted. I've gone to tournaments and meets and etc. Thats like saying lfs are drug dealers cause they make aquarium keeping addicting.

well, that's my experience with people who play the game. it doesn't make it any less true if you disagree and i know i'm not alone in feeling that way. if i was dr.phil wouldn't be doing shows on wow addicts and sites devoted to wow addictions. btw, if you have 20 consoles and 1000 games sounds like an addiction to me. that's like saying i have 100 fish tanks in my living room. i had to give up all my stuff to fit them in but i'm not addicted to the hobby. also, does your lfs charge a monthly fee for going there? do you go to the lfs for hours upon hours a week?

1. Some folks here are getting close to that number. 2. The LFS would if they realized they could get away with it. 3. I know I sure would if I actually had a LFS around here.

actually I work at a lfs so I guess you can say I have an addiction to fish tanks..and 20 consoles and 1000 games isnt a addiction its called a hobby..theres video game collectors just like there is fish collectors..there is people that come into my shop and literally spend a good 2-3 hours here a day and buy NOTHING...and a monthly charge is simply up to the person..your bf clearly decided that 12.99 is ok to pay a month...I on the other hand would never pay to play a game. Falls back on responsibilty and temptation..some can handle it..most cant...do I need to stay up all hours of the night play video games in my mothers basement? (btw ive long moved out) no I work 4 jobs and fit video games in WHEN I CAN..again my choice...I could very well sit in my living room and play video games and skip out on work or skip out on family time..but I dont..

okay well i stand corrected on that point. still, the creaters of the games know what to do to make their games as addictive as possible and they do use that to get people hooked. many games aren't that addictive though, i mainly think that the rpg game are a problem for many, many people.
you have people that come hang out at your lfs everyday and don't buy anything? your lfs must be way better than mine.

course they make the game addictive its how the economy works..but mainly its up to the people to let it get to them. I play rpgs btw ;)
and sadly yes people come in daily and just hang out..ask a billion and 1 questions and then leave without buying anything.

I totally agree that MMORPGs can be addicting. I seriously am a recovering gaming addict. I have spent too many hours smack dab infront of a computer playing some game promising myself and others that I will log off in a couple of minutes; a couple of minutes usually turn into hours... I have passed on RL things so I could stay at home and play. I have pulled all nighters camping newly released housing so I could be one of the first on the server to have it. (And then spent numerous hours decorating said new house LOL). I have spent eight hour stretches trying to figure out BK Liar when it first came out. I would promise myself I was logging only to have a friend log in and get sucked into staying.
I don't know what the draw is. I don't know if it is because you can never really win a MMORPG; there is always new gear to get, new baddies to beat, pk rank to keep. I don't know if it is an ADHD thing. All of hardcore gamer friends (including myself) seem to be adults with ADHD.
I still have one online subscription. I usually play one or two nights a week with my hubby after the babies are in bed. I get my fix, but the game is boring enough that after a couple of hours I am ready to log off.

an ex GF of mine got hooked on that game bad.
as in 1000 hours of game time in a little over 3 months bad. she wasn't working at the time, so that made it easier I guess.. you cant put that much time in while working..
did I mention she was an EX? LOL
it looks fun to me, but I won't touch it.
next thing you know, I'll be playing all week, calling in sick from work to play it etc. lol
Friday/saturday nights become raid nights etc.
not for me lol
have fun folks, but be careful.

There are definitely people who get addicted to the game in the true sense of an addiction. People who get addicted to things usually get addicted because it fills a void in their life, however... if you have an addictive personality you are GOING to get yourself addicted to something. Whether it be video games, alcohol, sex, drugs or whatever else that's out there. Personally I'd rather be addicted to a video game than any of the other things I listed above. While I do play video games a lot, I am far from addicted. I take care of everything else in my life first, I know my priorities. Yes I pay $156 a year to play the game with monthly fees. The argument, though, is that this game gets major updates and changes constantly, the servers are excellently maintained and patrolled (there is NO cheating on Blizzards servers. if a new hack comes out the hammer gets dropped usually within 12 hours and the hackers get permanently banned). Also, before WoW I'd mill through console and other video games at about 1 game per month... games cost $50-60 now... so if my old habits held true I'd be spending a lot more money on games than $156 a year. Most hobbies get expensive, that's just how it is.

Yup I play WOW. Been playing all the Blizzard games back inthe day...Warcraft, Starcraft, Diablo and now WoW.
Have a lvl 80 Boomkin and a 74 BM dwarf hunter on Hydraxis and several other lowbie alts.
Like what most people have commented here it is addictive only if you want it to be. I work 14 hours a day but I still get some game time for myself only because for me it's my form of relaxation. I don't get carried away it took me over a year to get to 80 but hey so what. It's a game. Made a lot of good friends on the game but I never neglected my real life friends and family and still have a life.
So there it is... like in real life everything should be taken in moderation.

Sounds very familiar... Well I dont *think I have ADHD but I am a perfectionist... which leads to pretty similar situations. :( I remember camping some bosses for about 1.5 years to get 1 item that I wanted.
I think the community makes or breaks a game like you said. I think the most fun I had was when I was dicking around with friends, exploring random places nobody wanted to go, killing ridiculously hard bosses that had no drops.
I treated my friends in-game as the same as my friends in real life. Even though the world is virtual, the relationships are real (if you have find good friends). Theres actually not much of a difference in real life and a virtual world; what we perceive as *real is nothing more than an summation of what our imperfect senses interpret. I think if you treat MMOs as an additional source of finding new friends instead of a substitution of finding friends in *real life, then it should be relatively safe. Unfortunately you cant play MMOs as an additional source of income. :evil_lol:
On a different note, I just found out that FFIV online is coming out in a year or so... I dont know if I can fit in my schedule now though.

when I was in the process of breaking up with my ex over her months long addiction to WoW, I went to gamerwidow.com.
seems like its becoming a common problem out there..
its sad. people neglect their kids, wives, husbands, work, school, you name it to play this stuff...:(
its not quite as simple as 'its filling a void in their life' like everyone always says..
the games are designed to consume time.
what took you half an hour to gain at the beginning levels takes you 8 hours to gain in the higher levels..and so on
thats how the addiction happens.

I guess it could be worse for me ( or so my mom always tells me) he could be "out" with the boys instead of upstairs in the computer room and I wouldn't know what he was playin'....
I have my hobbies as well I don't think mine are as all consuming as WOW but then I think sometimes thats a good thing I do enjoy total control of the TV remote most all the time - who doesn't love that!!!
