Short front claws and short fat tail.

I'm afraid I have to disagree. That is a young male, too young to have developed the long claws yet. The important character is the position of the cloaca: a female's cloaca will be very close to where the tail joins the body, while the male's is separated from the body by a thick tail base, as here.

Yep, I agree with Noto. You say the RES is about 1 year old. Well it takes 3-5 years for these guys to reach sexual maturity.

ok, so it sounds like i was way off with the age estimation, it is actually 4 years old and was about an inch when she bought it

I'm in with Noto and VF on this one, for what it's worth there is no real certainty until sexual maturity but many of the budding signs are there for a male, hard to tell for sure based on the angle in the pic but it looks as though the plastron is developing a bit of the classic concave appearance as well. In my experience the males tend toward a pattern of id markers prior to making things certain:
widening tail base, low (and then noticibly lower) vent placement
plastron concavity that becomes more and more pronounced
lengthening of fron claws (can be quite dramatic)
fanning - flashing of male parts (you wont ever wonder again at that point)

I'd say female, my male had longer claws by the that size. I have two turtles 1 male and female so it kinda stuck out when they were both the same age and 1 had noticeably longer claws. just my thoughts though

I trust the position of the cloaca above the length of the claws, and I still say male :D
