go fish

HELP!!! I bought a 10 gallon tank (came complete with the heater and filter) as a Christmas gift for my 5 y/o son. Unfortunately, I know as much as he does about fish! I guess I should ask first of all; How do I prepare the water? The kit came with a trial size pack of water conditioner suitable for "all fresh and marine aquariums". Will that go for any fish we decide to get? ....that will be a whole new set of questions! :thud:

Welcome to Aquaria Central! A 10g is not an ideal size to do saltwater especially for a beginner that "hasn't learned the ropes of fish keeping yet". It will be an uphill battle just to warn you. You will need salt, a hydrometer, a saltwater test kit, some sand, live rock, and a cocktail shrimp from the grocery store to get you started. You will need to add water and possibly the water conditioner. What type is it? Clean the sand and add it to the tank. Then add the filter and throw in the shrimp and let it sit like that for at least a month. Then test it after a month. And you can add 1-2 fish max. A pair of Ocellaris or Percula Clownfish will work nicely but that will be it fish. Anyway, hope this helps and good luck.

Thanks so much for your rapid reply. I appreciate the information. I think I posted under the wrong category. I wouldn't dare try saltwater fish yet. I'm just learning there are warm water and cold water fish! Wish me luck and thanks again!
