So I was looking at my amazon biotope last night and i noticed that all my corys had missing whiskers. I have them with some flame tetras and i have a gravel bottom. I know i need to add sand but I just haven't had the money lately. Has this happened to anyone else? Could it be from my gravel beig too rough on them? Any help appreciated thanx

Is it regular aquarium gravel? I'd take some out and rub it between your fingers...if it feels sharp to the touch its too sharp for your corys. Otherwise, I've never had problems.

What about your params? Poor water quality can wear away at barbels.

It could be both, water and gravel. My cory's have been on sand for almost a year and their barbels are amazing! Almost as long as an upside down cats.

I had a bad case where a lot of my babes lost their barbels & one it's bottom lip as well as their dorsal & caudal fins - all part of tail rot. so I have to say it must have been fungal or bacteria. but the other non-catfish were ok.

Well i do have some rocks i collected from the river in the tank and they might be too sharp for them to handle. I'm gonna change to sand and remove as many rocks as i can. It's probably the river rocks causing it. Poor kitty fish

rough gravel is a nono. and deep gravel vacs are a must.
