Aright, so i have a five gallon tank in my dorm. it came with an hang on back filter that is way to big and makes to much current for Albi, my second betta. i havent been using any type of filter at all and it has worked fine for the past couple of weeks cause betta can breathe from the surface. i was thinking about getting a bottom feeder of some type. It would have to be small though. but the water isnt agitated and doesnt have a bubbler. So i don't think there is enough oxygen in the water? this is only my second tank so i'm no expert. So any suggestions on if i should get a different type of filter? A small bottom feeder? i was thinking some pygmy cories? or would they even over crowd the tank? idk. any suggestions would be appreciated.

here are some pictures of Albi

regarding the red highlighted sentence - I guess I'm confused. Yes betta's come to the surface for air, but a filters purpose is not to put oxygen in the tank, but to keep the water clean and the "gunk" fish poop, left over food, ect, filtered out.
Perhaps try a smaller filter. How full is your tank? I fill my 5 gallon betta tank as full as I can to reduce water movement from the flow of the filter. If you are concerned about oxygen in your tank, maybe try a very small airstone. ALso do you have live plants? a few small plants woul give off some oxyen and also help your water quality.

I agree with montanafish gal. Like she said a filter is not to oxygenate the water it is to clean the water.

If your filter is creating too much agitation you can turn the spray bar around or direct the flow of the output into something to lessen it. A plant, driftwood, whatever.

If you want another fish in your tank, better upgrade to at least a 10g, then maybe your filter wouldn't be too strong.

I take blocks of aquaclear filter foam (size 30) and cut blocks big enough to fit over the end of the filter intake. Use an open-celled foam so water can pass through fairly well. Cut an opening into the foam and jam your filter intake into it, then place it in the water. It not only makes a handy prefilter, but slows the flow some.
