The 1x55 kits can use either a 55 or 36W bulb depending on how much light you need. (I am using a 36W bulb in a 55W kit that I have installed on my 20G tank.) They can be installed inside a standard 24in-30in light strip (after removing the stock light from the enclosure).
When I bought the kits, I was advised to buy the 1x55 kits so I had the flexibility of using either size bulb.
The units are still wrapped in the original bubble wrap- they have never been used.
