I have a strange fungus or bacteria in my 55 gallon heavily planted tank that I cannot figure out what to do about. I've tried Pimafix and Melafix. I'm concerned about trying to treat the entire tank because I have Plants, Shrimp and Assassin Snail.
I see signs of fungus on all my fish but have only experienced death from it when I had German Blue Rams. My Cardinal and Rummynose Tetras get a little bit of white fungus from time to time but it goes away and each fish is totally fine. However, when I introduced German Blue Rams to the tank, they would one by one (over the course of three months) develop a white "ulcer" or sore and within 3 days, they would be dead. I would notice an increase in flashing in the days before they died.
My water is very clean and well maintained.
Here are my water and tank parameters:
55 Gallon Planted Freshwater
Tank is seven months old
Eheim Pro II 2028 - cleaned every couple months. working well.
Hydor powerhead for extra circulation
Red Sea CO2 Pro System
Sunpaq Retrofit Kit 4 x 64 Watt running at 128 Watts for 10 hours and 256 Watts for 4.
Airstone running overnight when lights are off
30% Water changes weekly
Fish are fed Tetra Tropical Crisps, Tetra Granules, Algae Tablets and Sinking Carnivore Tablets. Twice daily with an Eheim Autofeeder. Most food is gone within a minute or two.
82F
PH 6.8 - 7.0
KH 4
GH 8
CO2 20ppm+/-
Amonia 0
Nitrites 0
Nitrates 0
My Fish:
23 Carndinal Tetras, 10 Rummynose Tetras, 1 Siamese Algae Eater, 10 Otos, 20+ Cherry Shrimp, Various snails.
On the Cardinals and Rummynose the fungus or bateria is a fuzzy white growth on the fins and body and sometimes it will be white "string" looking. When on the Blue Rams, it's a white sore with fuzzy edges, usually on the side of the body or head.
I tried Pimafix and Melafix as recommended but it had no effect. I still lost all Blue Rams within three months.
Does anyone have any ideas what's going on here and how to treat it without affecting my plants, shrimp or snails? I'd like to keep German Blue Rams but I'm confident if I try again I will have the same results.
Any thoughts or opinions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
