A member had mentioned that Tetramin & similar products have wheat as ingredient & that is a filler that is not beneficial & just causes more pooping - so they don't recommend.
I have Tetramin & TopFin so guess I am feeding the wrong flakes.
Reading that, I bought a few flake types from www.kensfish.com mainly HGH which is marketed as not having the unnecessary fillers that the mass produced superpet stores/LFS carry. but when I look at the ingredient list, it too has wheat.
any opinions? I will finish out my supply (I mixed the 2 canisters & now have one full can).
so what about HGH flakes?
also, what do you use?
what would one say is the best flake food to use?

out of flake food, kens is probably the best quality. it depends what fish you're feeding, but I feed pelleted food most often (usually hikari but would not hesitate to order kens) As far as I know, an important thing to consider is that fish are not as well equipped to digest land-based ingredients as sea-based... Which is why it's better to feed fish-meal based food than say, dog food like some koi breeders do

I use Kens Brine shrimp flake, beefheart flake, and spyrolina with garlic and paprika for my discus. As well as his sinking bits and 5 stick blend. I also use his cichlid mix for my other cichlids & his algae wafers for my bottom feeders.

I use Kens or Hikari, mostly Ken's as he will answer any nutritional questions you have and also cannot beat the price for quality.

Same here.
With Ken's I get far more for the money than fancy packaging gets me. I buy just once a month (if that), get more, and spend less with him. The quality of the food is super and the fish readily eat it.

So is wheat bad or not?
I currently use Ken's. I have also gotten food from Daves Rare fish and have used tetra flake food.
I order filter refills from Ken so it is just a matter of convinence. If I was odering fish from Dave, I get food also. If I have not ordered anything online for awhile, I go out and get some tetra flakes. The LFS here that had cheap food went out of business.

I have been using tetra foods for 20 years. all that has happened is my fish grow and live long :)
tetra seems to have a rep as a bad food, but as those of you who have seen my barbs growing and stuff etc, I am not sure as to why..

I have never heard of Tetra foods being poor quality and fed my fish on it for years. Never had a nourishment related problem with their foods. I would still be using Tetra if I hadn't previously switched to Ken's.
I have tried Wardley products and found my fish to not be quite as healthy or colorful on it. It could have just been coincidental, except that my neighbor uses Wardley products exclusively and is forever having problems with her fish.

well, a lot of people over on MFK think it is crap compared to Hikari foods etc.

I agree except for the shrimp pellets which are great. but yeah, I was not a fan of their flake line or granular line.

Kens for me. Price is cheap, shipping very reasonable and fish love it. I buy flakes, veggie sticks, betta pellets and pellets for corys.

I have a variety of LFS bought fish food ( Tetra sinking tablets, Hikari crab pellets, Freeze dried Bloodworms and brine shrimp and tubifex worms) but I just this past month ordered from Kens Fish and you get WAY more food for the money and the quality is very good.
I ordered (from Kens) Brine shrimp flakes, sinking veggie sticks, sinking earthworm sticks, no carb pellets - my fish and inverts LOVE them. I will def. order from Kens again - good quantity/quality for the price!
Great tips fellow AC'ers!

oh! I am a big converted fan of kens also! I ordered the 2 HGH batches he has recommended on his site. can not beat the value lb for lb (or oz for oz!!). & since I needed meds & an AC70 (his prices on AC's & heaters are quite good also) & his shipping costs are so reasonable, it's no wonder so many like kens. I am a big booster of his!
thx again, all 8=)

Omega one has 5 various seafood and fish ingredients listed before wheat so it is one of the better ones you can buy in the store. Wardley's has stopped using artificial colors but I don't know about the quality of ingredients. I hate how Hikari puts MSG in theirs.

Omega1 is awesome as well. I wish they had bigger pellets:(
I used to get a lot of it when a fish store here sold it in bulk. Now that they quit doing that I quit buying it.
It is fantastic quality though.

"I hate how Hikari puts MSG in theirs". OMG!:(
Mostly aquadine 'flake' and catfish wafers. Hikari crab cuisine for the shrimpies.
Aquadine.com is still offering free samples, it's $2.49 shipping. They do send a full container of food tho.

I found hikari & omega's quite expensive - no doubt very good quality. But since I have bought from www.Kensfish.com (he has a great line & variety & his prices are fantastic + his shipping doesn't kill ya). I have resigned myself that what I have is good enough. Not much negative feedback on wheat ingredient to go crazy over. so I have actually mixed my ken's HBH food with my tetramin/topfin flakes so I am set. my discus & angels tanks doing fine with flakes with periodic treats of frozen brine/bloodworms & shrimp/spirulina pellets. kens is the way to go.

For me, cost and the good reviews got me to try Ken's. The only thing I don't care for is the oils slick it leaves on my water surface. However, I must admit that I feed heavily as I have well-stocked tanks. It is only the ones w/o plants that have the oil slick.
Unless you are a nutritionist I don't think there is much of a way to tell the quality of the foods other than color and general health. That is all I have to go by.

yeah! all these yrs mine had done well on flakes, mostly Tetramin. don't like wardley's which used to be inexpensive but still don't like their quality. I found ken's also & bought a slew of bags from him, my discus & angels all took to it. + the value he offers is very good.
www.kensfish.com for those interested.
