I have 2 clown plecos and im just wondering how much wood they will eat. The tank they are in has plenty of drift wood im wondering if they just need to have some around to snack on when the mood hits every now and then or are they going to munch on it everyday?

Hello Frogman,

I added 2 clown plecos to one of my tanks 6 to 8 weeks ago. I was hoping they'd help keep the glass clean. Then I read that they really don't eat much algae once they're grown, preferring to eat wood. As for my particular clown plecos, I've only seen them feeding on the glass twice since I added them to the tank, although being nocturnal, it could have been more. What I have seen them do is come out every 2 or 3 nights to feed on algae wafers or blanched zucchini, but mostly they seem to feed on the driftwood.

They graze on it pretty much continously, but they dont gnaw at it like beavers. More like a running over it with sandpaper. So it takes years for them to wear it away.

They eat a mix of wood, algae and the tiny creatures that live with them.

Give them some fresh veges as well, they should eat that, but they need the wood in their diet to keep their digestive system running smoothly.
