Whats up guys, so I'm running a 12 gallon community shrimp tank. Inhabitants right now are

10-12 amano Shrimp (12 went in, but its hard to count them, not all might have made it)

2 Atya Shrimp (aka vampire shrimp, filter feeders)

1 Bamboo shrimp (filter feeder)

2 African dwarf frogs

2 male guppies.

I might add a few more shrimp in there, but I would like to throw in another fish or 2 or 3 to make the entire tank more 'lively'.

What are the best options for fish in a community shrimp tank?

I really like habrosus cories for a shrimp tank, they are more of a midwater dweller and super cute. I would not get less than 4 though.

zebra oto's, they look sweet and won't eat baby shrimp.. not that you'll have to worry about that with the amanos anyways

The filter feeders are going to need some feeding from you. 3 in a 12gallon is way more than enough. Pygmy cories, or maybe even a honey gourami, but be warned they will try to eat the babies.

What do you recommend for feeding them? All the filter feeder websites I read said targeted feeding could actually harm them more than help.

Boraras urophthalmoides (exclamation point rasboras) are quite small and active. I've got 5 or so (started out with 12 but several died right after shipping and have only seen 5) with amano shrimp and cherry shrimp.

I have kept vampire shrimp for a while now and not to scare u in anyway but I would say 2 vampire 's and a bamboo in a 12g might not turn out so well I have just one at the min in a 300l 14 month old tank which just about supports him on food .
I don't see u mentioned how old your tank was but if its under 6 month old then u might not have the food they require, a good way of knowing if your tank hasn't enough micro foods is if they are fanning the gravel or substrate for food this can damage there fans over time .
i heard somewhere that when they poo a bacteria foams and lives in your filter which then supports another bacteria which then supports the shrimp ((if i can find the link again i will post it for u but haven't found it in the last 30 mins so isn't looking good )) but even in my 300l its 50/50 at best to rely on this .
I have spent months on tracking down certain marine filter foods that have some of the micro food the shrimps need and yet again its a 50 /50 chance and even though i have several friends that use them to feed the shrimps with no problems its hard to get the right one (( I'm from the uk which doesn't seem to have the same range of food types as say the us doe's so if u can find some tropical filter food then u could save your self a bit of work ))
Anyway without boring everyone to much they bets way i have found to keep her happy is a combo of brine shrimp and crushed algae wafer and fish flakes and i mean crush to a really fine power , you can gently spot feed him if u feel he isn't getting enough food or what i found works best is when u turn your lights off feed some in front of your filter outlet . Also u should have lots of bog wood in front of a strong filter current as this is where they get most of there food oh and they also love brineshrimp ain’t sure of bamboo shrimp but my vampire loves them.

This ain’t the be all and end all to vampire shrimp and others might have better ways but mine is healthy and on his way to becoming 5 inch so I must be doing something right anyway hope this helps and good luck with them they are amazing shrimp to watch and more then worth there feeding troubles and as always sorry for any mistakes
