my local pet store actually sells algae! not a joke here, the idiot who sells the fish there told me people love it and ask to buy it all the time so he does. dont be fooled by your local store selling you a plant thats actually algae lol.
this pic is the hair algae ball they have had growing for several years, the guy is actually proud of the mess and has cherry shimp in it for sale so you get some cherrys and some algae to go with them since they say its good for the shrimp as food.
again this is not a joke. pic was taken last week, there was alot more than that in there few months ago i guess some lucky people bought it up.
yet another good reason not to trust your local pet store guys on anything

hahaha, speaking of that, I recently discovered that the petco near me sells java moss rolled around a cork as "moss balls."

Well, I got what I think are true Marimo balls about a month ago. They are already sending off little tufts to multiply, and those tufts could easily be mistaken for regular hair algae. Sometimes I wonder how much difference there actually is.

The clado that makes up marimo balls is not forcefully rolled into balls to "make" them into marimo - it grows that way.

You guys can laugh all you want but when I first started many many moons ago before I got my plant/CO2/fert balance sort of right I had the prettiest patch of that stuff.
I thought it was pretty (yeah I was a total newb!) so I let it grow for a bit on top of a statue as "hair" yeah I can hear you all laughin'
Finally figured out it wasn't some great new plant so I twirled it up and put it where it belonged!! But for a while there the budda lady in my avatar had a hair algae hat!
Swore I wasn't going to tell anybody that....must be gettin' late.

you need to sell them on the purple string, petco "moss balls" that always float and have them put it all together with a big ugly rock to hold it all down. it could be like an aquarium jungle gym. an all in one package. they can charge like an extra $50 to have someone make up a custom "jungle gym" while you wait. for a bonus they can throw in a brick with a stick hideout complete with custom art deco water spots at "no extra charge".
i see this going places...

HAHA < I took that pic, we went in, and it was all in the floor, VERY neat looking, I have to say ... LOL ~ but the day I remebered to bring my camrea, it was all raised up like this, and the red cherrys are everywhere, I think he is selling them for 2.99 a pc ? they maybe more, custom would remember better than me. lol I have alot more pics of thier' tanks and all the dead fish in the tanks with brand new stock fish they just got in, its so sad. WHY do pet stores HAVE to be SO Nasty ?? They cant clean the floor behind the tanks, its just gross, if you ever look' . I try to stay and just look at fish, buy my prime, and get out . I mostly buy ALL my products online now, and I try to buy most of my new fish from hobbiest as well . I HATE fish stores ! It is VERY far & inbetween that you find a fish guy' that actually knows how to even raise a koi pond, mostly they just want to send you home with a goldfish & a bowl !!! :( It is truly sad. maybye the green algea will be back on the floor like it was once before without my glasses, when he showed it to me, I thought it was subwarssertang !!! LMAO ~~ then as I got a closer look OMG ~ Never seen green hair algea So healthy !! And I cant remember the selling price, but I know he is selling it . with his 3.00 cherry shrimp ! LMAO ~~ Mine love moss, and I prefer to keep it that way .
