I have basically an empty 55 gallon. Currently I have an angelicus and an upside down catfish in it. The tank has been running for 10 yrs and they have been in there since the start so what ever I put in they are must stay. love the 2 of them. I had every African labs(like these), zebras (not so much), calvus ( liked but I think a catfish ate it) and few other misc cichlids in there. But never a wow fishes. I am now looking for suggestions on this. some thing that has really nice color, not too run of the mill (meaning that it is not found at petco etc. I only buy parts and supplies from these stores).

Thoughts?

tropheus. sanddwellers (controversial in a 55g). mbuna. alot of tang species arnt commonly seen. as well as victorian cichlids. and i agree, petco fish suck.

forgot to mention WELCOME TO AC!!!

I want to suggest you to choose one species you would like to have badly and then it should be easier for us to help you to complete a stocking plan. Welcome to AC!

A good start would be to choose a species tank so you can witness the breeding cycle of a certain species.. I remember when i first started an African setup it was 7 Copadichromis borleyi 2M / 5F which bred for me and looked awesome and i was able to see first hand the breeding behavior that these fish possessed.. I was hooked on Africans at that time..
