Anybody know if this stuff is available on the pacific coast? I would really like to get a couple bags. Also, how many 50lb backs will I need for a 55gal aquarium? I would like to have a little left over for my 10gal, but would like a good 3-4inch substrate bed on my 55 reef tank.

Thanks

As far as I know, Southdown/OldKastle sand isn't available on the left coast. :(

For an idea of how much sand you'll need for each tank, check out the sandbed calc at:

You can pick up playsand at any Home Depot or Lowe's. Many will say if they are not approved for aquarium use, but you may want to ask someone that works there.

I used just aragonite playsand and had no problems... from what I have heard, Southdown is just playsand from the caribbean. If you have access to it, great. But if you don't... just get the next best thing....

And, if the grain size and color of the play sands don't appeal to you, you can use pool filter sand or sandblasting sand. I used pure white sandblasting sand and it's been working perfectly for about two years now.

I found some southdown in Idaho. I'm willing to make the drive, and the guy has it for 12bucks a bag. I'll charge 15bucks for each bag since I'm driving to go get it. How many bags does everyone want?
