I've got a flat back hex and I don't know how many gallons it is. Other than filling it up by the bucket, is there any formula for determining gallons in a hex?

If you wanted a ballpark guess, treat it as a cylinder knowing that it will be a little less. Otherwise, i believe you will have to break it up into triangles each with a 60 degree angle. You could also search known aquarium dimensions by manufacturer.
If you broke it up into triangles, I believe you would have 6 with each with an area of .5(base)(height)*length. You will have to use some combination of law of sines and or cosines to find the height and base of each triangle. If you got me measurements, I could figure it for you.

Measure the sides, not a hard calculation
