They latch on with their sucker mouth and have tiny teeth on their jaws that rasp away at anything edible which they then eat. So they cant swallow large items, but they will rasp away at anything edible and just wear it down. Ian

So a pleco cruises around until it sees / smells something tasty and then sucks on to it and then rasps away edible material until the area is spotless of food.
