So I'm upgrading to a bigger tank, I've had convicts and I've had a betta in the past but never in this size of a tank. But I also want to put some tankmates with the male so that the tank won't be empty. I wanted to put in some swordtails but will they be too fancy? I know males will attack other fish that look like other males. So questions.

Can I put swordtails in with a male betta?

What other fish can I put into the tank with the male?

Can I put some female betta in there or will he just chase them around the entire time?

I wanted to put some neon tetra in the tank but I heard they are nippy with males?

My male sword was an absolute terror. Even with two females (both of whom he harassed to death) he would thrash around the tank. Granted, it was only 30 gallon but still he was a major PITA. I'm sure other individuals have a different personality but as you could imagine I'm not a huge fan of swordtails anymore...

Neons might not be an issue, but I'd be tempted to go with a school of cherry barbs and a school of harlequin rasboras instead. Add some corys for the bottom and call it a pseudo-asian tank, ;)

Lol I actually had this list going for the tank. Neons/Cherry barbs, cory, swordtails and the harlequin rasboras. Then of course my betta. Now I know he will be a little territorial, how many of each could I put in the tank?

Lol your probably better at it then I am, I usually over stock or really under stock it.

Might leave the sword tails out then, I planned on getting a betta from a breeder, any tips on where to find a breeder around the Louisiana area?

Try Aquabid if not then I have no idea maybe do some googling online. I got all 4 of my current Betta's from my job Walmart just make sure there healthy I think they get there shipments for fish in on tuesdays. Would imagine its prob the same for ur local Walley World.

my local walmart doesn't sell them anymore. And I'm looking for a halfmoon either a red or black and blue. I will have to check at my lfs to see when they get the new bettas in and if they could special order me one. I took a look around on aquabid and it would cost me almost $40 for one but I will keep looking, I might end up paying it if it gets me a pretty fish like they show.

oh..could I keep a group of females in the tank with my male? Its a large tank so I figured he wouldn't chase them around all the time.
