Do carbon filter inserts add carbon to the water column for plants?

Don't think so. The types of carbon are not the same--CO2 is bio-available to plants, while I don't think the carbon used for chemical filtration is.
OG is correct. Granular carbon has zero bioavailability. Basically that means CO2 (or a few special small organics as in Seachem's Excel).
