Hey, this may be a long shot, but can anyone suggest a good place to buy online plants for an Eastern Canadian. I've checked out a few sites (like aquatic-store.com (great site btw)) but the shipping from the states always kills, i.e. doubles the price! Yikes!

If I could find a good site where the shipping wouldn't kill, it would save me a lot of time and $$ over the LFS's in and around Halifax.

I think Thunder Bay is mid Canada, not east but I found this link.

Hmm, that Thunder Bay place is new to me. Anyone have any experience with them? Although their selection is very poor, I can find all those plants at local LFS's.

happychem - the only canadian place I have experience with is www.ottawaaquatics.com and it's not good. I ordered, sent a cheque (very stupid ordering process btw), which was not good because I made it out to Ottawa Aquatics (nowhere on the site did it say to make it out to what's-his-name instead). That was ok, he told me my order would ship and I could send him a new cheque when I got the order. Well, order never came. He wrote maybe once a month for 2 months saying it's too hot to ship (this was september by this time), then never heard from him again. At least I didn't lose ny money, unless he manages to cash my Ottawa Aquatics cheque, which was never returned to me.

it really sucks for plants in Canada, huh?

In my one experience with shipping plants I've found that there are a few that don't like it. My Rotala, Hygro and Bacopa still look bedragled after months. They have recovered and the NEW growth since then is normal, but the leaves that were there during the shipping process look like crap. They seem to be "traumatized".

Example (the middle of the Rotala):

I know Thunder Bay isn't very close to you as it is here in Ontario but I can highly recommend James. I recently dealt with him when buying plants and was very satisfied. He shipped the plants first and I think the prices were much better than local stores.

Starry don't just consider the website, it's not nearly kept up to date. The best thing to do would be email him because he can also get plants that he doesn't have in stock. I got a beautiful anubias minima from him for an excellent price. If you let him know what you are looking for he will probably be able to find it for you.

Yeah, it's the shipping that kills (and not just the wallet, wight Joe?). I'll check out the TB site, get an estimate of the shipping costs. May be that it's cheaper just cause it's in the same country. On the other hand, TB is still a long way for a plant to be shipped and it may just be better to buy at the LFS's.
