Spring Hill Kansas SW of Kansas City
Real Name
Don
Coming to the salty side...

125-130 Gallon approx 72x18x21. w/glass tops + wood stand

2 Emperor 400 HOB filters

Protein Skimmer (not sure what brand/size)

~50-100 lb of live rock + 50-100 lb of live sand.

4 x 3' T8 lighting

I got a good enough price on this that it would be a deal for FW :)

My friend had this for years but lost interest and needs the space.
Filters/skimmer have been off for at least a month since the last fish died. Apparently there's still some small starfish and other small life left.

So anyway...I suspect the water is pretty horrible. I'm thinking....keep enough water to keep the live rock and sand wet - pitch the rest and make new.

Planning to move it next Friday. Any tips?

I am in NO hurry to stock it. Eventual goal is several banggai cardinals, maybe some crabs and shrimp. Definitely want to be understocked.

take all live rock out of the tank first. If you can move the tank and stand together then good. be sure to strap the tank to the stand if you decide to do it this way.if you have the funds then i would highly recommend you get a furniture removalest to help. there expertise and skill in moving heavy things will pay dividends, plus they have special tools for the job.
also it may pay to put a few large peices of foam in the tank, and pack the tank and stand in blankets.

Points well taken...

Guess I should have clarified:

We plan to empty the tank completely; the sand and rock will go in plastic containers with water to cover. Tank will have to go down stairs so it will need to be empty anyway.

The physical part of the move? got that covered...
Tank and stand will be moved separately, well padded. I have a truck with a padded 8x4 ft bed :) I've moved a few tanks in it already.

Move is ~ 15 miles. We can make separate trips for the tank & stand if needed.

Goodluck with it. take some pics once you get it.

Sounds like a great tank! Some sugestions:

Sand
Sand beds get really nasty over time and if you are going to scoop that bed out to move the tank you are going to stir up all sorts of detritus which may cause a spike in nitrates. It doesn't sound like there is much livestock to be concerned about but wanted you to know just in case. If the spike is severe enough it could kill the starfish, etc. You can minimize this by moving the tank with the sand in it and a little water to keep it wet. I would imagine this would make an already heavy lift much heavier. You could also clean the old sand really well or buy new sand. If you get new sand you don't have to buy live sand as you can keep a few cupfulls of the old sand to seed the new bed. The few cupfulls and your live rock will seed the bed in no time.

Water
I would only keep enough water to keep the LR submerged while you move and reset the tank and I would not use that water to refill the tank. The amount of benefinical bacteria in your LR and your sand far outways what is in the water. If you have life in the tank you hope to keep alive make sure you match the temperature and specific gravity (ideally somewhere around 1.024 - 1.026) of the old water with the new water. Keep in mind that SG is dependent on water temp. You should also plan on allowing your new SW to mix for at least a few hours but overnight is best to ensure proper mixing. You may be using premix water from your LFS and if so disregard that last part (except matching the SG). Also, don't use tap water and use RO/DI water to mix and top-offs.

Livestock
Probably obvious but either bag fish/corals & inverts or use a seperate bucket so they don't get smooshed. Also if they will be out if the tank for a while don't foregt to use a heater and a small powerhead for flow. Give your liverock a good shake under SW or use a turkey baster to blow off deteritus from your rock.

Good luck with the move and welcome to SW. Glad you got a good deal because your about to spend some coin!!!

Deal is $200 for all and he will help me move it...cuz he thinks I will take good care of it.

Will need to let it run awhile to "un-rotten" the water...

Planning to get it next week, this week didnt work out
