Playing around with intank sump or refugium or whatever you want to call it. Where the water overflows into the sump, could I just toss some floating plants in there for a filter, and put some lava rock below it?

Planning on this being a low light(15watt) possibly moss tank.

FLoating plants would be the best for absorbing excess nutrients.

I found the idea at a marine site, and thought that might be kind of neat for a non cluttered(the tank) desk tank. I have it built, but need to paint the back, and work on a light I have laying around. I had it running last night and when I looked at it this morning, the water is very cloudy, no heater or substrate. What could that be? Bloom?
