I have a Penguin 330 HOB that I am trying to quiet because it seems to be making a rattling noise. I think it's coming from the impeller area of the filter but not positive. Any tips on quieting it? I took it apart today and added phosphate and ammonia sponges to the baskets. I also messed around with the impeller but couldn't quiet it. The guy at Big Al's suggested a new impeller but that is expensive and I'm looking for alternatives first.

You may have charcoal debris down in the impeller well. Flush the charcoal canister very well before inserting it.

mkae sure theres nothing in the impeller well i use a small brush or a qtip would work and then wait till its seated properly, the 330s i have were noisier than they should be too i just cousioned the part where its hanging on the tank and put a little pad on its leg and taped a mousepad over the vents to drown everything out.

Thanks for the good ideas. I will definitely try flushing the impeller area out really well to see if anything is stuck in there. Blitzen25bm did the little pad and mouse pad make a difference? I may try that as well. The filter is in a bedroom so I'm trying to make it as silent as possible.

Good luck getting the filter quiet! ;)

I have every model AquaClear makes and will always stick with them. Their filters last forever and make minimal noise.

Before this 330 I have had AquaClear products, a 200 and a Mini. I agree that the ACs are rock solid but so far I have been very impressed with the 330. The filter itself holds a ton of media (2 sponge inserts with carbon and 2 additional baskets) and the biowheels seem like a good idea. If I can silence this slight rattling all will be good.
