View Full Version : Betta with dwarf crays?

I want to move my betta out of my 55G. I noticed my tiger barbs nipping at him a little today. I've had the barbs in there with him for a month and this is the first I have seen it. The barbs are growing up though (I got them when they were very tiny juvies) so thats probably why the change in behavior. The only options I have at this moment is a 10 gallon with dwarf crays in it. I do have a 15gallon RCS tank as well. So would the betta but ok with the dwarf crays or should I move the crays to the RCS shrimp tank?

The dwarf cray tank would be a disaster. If you put it into the RCS tank, the RCS will get eaten.

I meant putting the dwarf crays in with the RCS, not the betta.
So options are:
1) Betta with Drawf crays
2)Betta in its own tank and dwarf crays mixed with RCS

Well for #1, the betta would be stressed/eaten. With #2 the RCS would get eaten.

Have you ever had dwarf crays? There is no way in the world that the dwarf crays would eat the betta.

I would think you dwarf crays would be fine with your betta.If anything,your betta may pick on,or eat them.
I have betta's with dwarf shrimp,and do not have any problems.
But as betta's go,it all depends on the fish.

I would mix them with the RCS. They should be fine. My concern about putting it with the betta is their vulnerability after molting.

They are Cambarellus shufeldtii. I will put them in with the RCS. Thanks!

They should be fine, just have lots of hiding places for them after they molt. I have those as well and they don't even bother my pest snails let alone shrimp. They can be a little scrappy to each other though.

Do you want me to write an answer that YOU want to hear instead? I wrote what I said because I've seen it happen. Mr. Betta was very curious and would harass the daylights out of Mr. Cray when my friend was upgrading his tank. At night when the betta was resting, the cray came out got revenge. The betta got some tattered fins on him the next day. Maybe it was a special case, but I can only account for what I have experienced, not what others say.
As for the RCS and the cray, I've seen the cray smack around the shrimp during feeding time. This leads me to believe that if the cray was of different temperament, and if the cray was slightly hungrier it wouldn't be a stretch for them to go after some shrimp if they felt like it.

Dwarf crays are only the size of an adult dwarf shrimp, perhaps you dealt with a different species?
I have Shufeldtii with RCS and they are perfectly fine with each other. I've even seen tiny baby Palaemonetes stroll right in front of the crays without getting a second glimpse.
Shufeldtii like to chase fish and shrimp off during feedings- but I've never seen them harm one.
