I cleaned my snail tank really well today. I have been sick for the last month or so and my husband has been helping me with doing water changes (no thorough cleaning like I normally do). Anyway, he missed a clutch and now I have about 200 babies in one of my Bridgesii tanks. I guess around Christmas time I am going to have snails for sale. Fortunately my LFS has agreed to take some of them. I thought I had the males and females separated, but it appears that is not the case. I am hoping that it was my Burgandy female that laid, but I will have to see. All of the babies that I have seen appear to be light footed. But who knows.

How do you tell male and females apart?

Dose some morning after pills into the tank for her. Unwanted pregnancies/babies are terrible :( So much of a hassle.

If you cut back feeding, they should stop breeding. Separation works too, of course, but it can be a little difficult in sexing them.

On the bright side, you have a bunch of babies to sell in a month or two ;-) Perfect time for people to buy snails as christmas gifts to themselves. lol!

I am pretty sure I have figured out who the male is.....an Ivory. Which is good I guess. At least the babies will be what ever the mom has in her. If it is the burgandy and ivory then I will have a bunch of ivory, golds, yellow striped, and burgandy.

Looks right to me. But checking out their stuff is not as easy as it sounds. They have to really come very far out of the shell in the right direction for you to see.

I thought my big DSP was a boy- thought I saw a penis sheath- until I took a photo once and due to too -much flash, could actually see eggs through the shell.

(that and she is the favourite for my male spixi to mate with)

She's never laid eggs though- so I guess she just reabsorbs them- hope snails can't get egg bound.

My fault they never lay I suppose- I leave the waterline too high.

You hold them on their "back" underwater until it makes them mad and they come out trying to right themselves. Sometimes it is fast and sometimes it is slow. I have had my hand underwater waiting for 20 to 30 minutes.

I know in theory, but still the only way I can tell is when I erm... see them lay their eggs... ;)

Me too AquaGem! I have had folks ask me to sex the Briggsi babies so I can send them one or the other sex- just can't do it!!

That and kittens - its all a mystery to me and out of the two kittens are easier!!

You'll still have to be vigilant, even though you removed the male she may continue laying eggs for quite a while.

What to do with the unwanted ones?
Boil them, bake them with a little season-all and serve to family, friends, loved ones, pets.
