How about isolating the problem fish first if possible. I can not narrow down from pics.

I am sorry but can you specify full scientific name for this fish as I can not determine what it is. It looks more llike pencil fish or rasbora.

How about tank size, how long the tank been running with fish, pH/ammonia/nitrite readings, and tankmates?

it's a Puntius denisonii or red line torpedo barb.

To me, it looks like an injury.

40 gal, over a year, readings are all good. 9 denisonii, 1 pictus cat that mostly stays in its own corner until feeding time, 1 clown plec, 1 nerite snail, 1 baby fire eel that stays as far away from the denisonii as it can until it comes out to feed.

the injury started out looking like a glitch in the black line, but has gone like the pic in the past couple of weeks.

All the other denisonii are fine. When i last saw it, it was happily swimming about with the rest of the group. So he's been keeping an eye on it.

I was wondering if a salt dip would help. i wondered if it possibly just caught its self on the decor. But i wasnt sure so said maybe a post on here could shed more light on it.

thats what i thought doll. Theres always a load of tannins in the water from the wood that still leaching loads so maybe thats helping to minimise infection, as the wound doesnt look too inflamed.

Thanx. Nice looking fish. Dont recall such beautiful barbs when I was in f/w keeping. Reminded me of other cyprinids but not puntius.

Anyway, one can always make DIY contraption. All you need is plastic container which can be hung over the rim of the tank (Lee's products make few different size), small air pump and stone.
One can use any clean plastic jar (carbon jar, etc) as long as you can secure it so it wont tip over.
Darn! 14-0 Pittsburgh already. LOL!

Let container hang inside the tank, water level (Use tank water) slightly higher than the tank level. Stick very little and GENTLE aeration.
Voila! now you have small Q/T for emergency. Since container is inside the tank, no need for heater.

If one can calculate the volume of the water in the container, now you can cut(?) antibiotic/other meds (pills or capsules) proportionate to that volume.

As far as what it can be, can not tell that well from single pic.

Hope this helped.

thanks i wanted confirmation more than anything coz they are expensive fish, better to be safe than sorry. Meds are a hard one here, antibiotic is illegal and a lot of other meds are just there to look pretty im sure of it lol.

This is off topic but are stezatois and johnohon the same person or does stezatois have the same problem? I am asking this because the original poster is johnohon but then stezatois started acting like he was the original poster.

Am I missing something here?
