i've done both with no side effects. i use 1tsp per gallon. some people use more. i find that amount sufficient. it's more important to remove it slowly so the fish don't go into shock
Also, it's an african cichlid tank. Should I add table salt or aquarium salt, or does it even matter?
Just make sure the salt you use does not have additives (such as iodide).
And I agree with dissolving the salt in a container of warm tank water before adding it to the tank.
