Does anyone know what kind of spider this is? It's in NJ. It's about an inch long or just under.

Another "Guess the bug thread" aye?
Hmm....I'm not sure what species that is but it looks like it's from the Gnaphosidae family.

The reddish head and abdomen are in contrast from the lighter legs. Hind legs are lightest, appearing almost white.

DD I don't know how you could have that thing sitting there while you're taking a picture of it. Spiders make me scream like an idiot! LOL!
I just killed one of those exact spiders in my basement the other day.

If it were at my house- a squisharachnid.
I love spiders... A lot of them are quite pretty when you look at them closely and don't panic about "OMG it might crawl on me".

hahahaha, you guys are so funny!! This guy started off a couple days ago in the kitchen on the ceiling... now, I usually just let the spiders be, I figure they are good guys of the bug world, right? That was all good and stuff but last night, the sucker was in the bathroom and the whole situation changed. Thank goodness there are 2 bathrooms! I wouldn't think of squishing it, this one was definitely big enough to make noise LOL... I could have moved him outside if I wasn't so scared of him!
So running spiders.... do they bite?

I don't understand the fear of spiders. Do you tweak out the same way if a mosquito lands on you, or you see an ant crawling on your leg?

Yes... and their bite is usually deadly!
But only if you're a bug...
... if you're a human they won't bite you- they'll run in fear from you.
if they didnt bite how else would they feed!

well technically they don't bite. they have chilicera /fangs.
they use their mouth parts to grab and inject a digestive enzyme(not all).
this will dissolve the insides of the prey and they lap it up like a soup
(this does vary a bit)

I'm no spider expert- but the common Writing spider is absolutely stunning to look at. My wife and I love writing spiders... of which there seem to be a lot here in South Carolina.
Too dry and sandy for roses here- but when I lived in Greenville, my roses would always have the most beautiful bright green spiders living on them.
We occasionally see fishing spiders here... now those are beautifull spiders. Even some wolf spiders look pretty awesome.
With the exception of black widows- I usually leave spiders alone (I'd kill Brown Recluses if I saw one- but I never have, although I know they're in this area).
Figure, they can't hurt me (other than the above two species) - and they kill pest insects... what's not to like about them?

Just so they stay outside to live and don't try to set up house inside with me....it's all good! Oh yeah, and the ones that slowly drop down from over your head while you're driving..........:omg:

If you don't know what it is, you can always use it as the main ingredient in a brick sandwich.
My wife gets the heebie-jeebies too when she sees a spider.
