I wanted to start a discussion and get some opinions. My husband and I are having a disagreement over whether to run out and vaccinate our 3 kids, age 5,3, and 2 with the H1N1 vaccine.
I think, and my doctor told me the same thing, that the dangers of this flu have gotten blown way out of proportion by the media and others who want to scare the h*** out of the general public and send us all running to get shots. Now I am speaking of the flu strain that is going around Montana, Billings area in general. It is said to be mild here and my dr said she doesn't see any point to getting vaccinated as the cases aren't as bad as even the regular flu is.
My husband thinks they need the shots no matter what. I guess he's scared of them getting deathly ill, but they are healthy kids with healthy immune systems. I am more worried about the possible side effects and dangers of this "thrown-together" vaccine than I am the actual virus.
So, what does everyone else think and why? I'm curious.

My husband and I have decided not to get the shots for anyone in our family, despite the fact that we are both teachers. My daughter has no underlying health conditions and is still nursing, so we feel she is as well protected as she can be. I got the flu shot several years ago and had a severe reaction to it, which is another reason she will not be getting the shots. We also wash hands religiously and change clothes when we get home from work. It comes down to you deciding what is right for your family. Good luck with your decision!

Swine Flu HAS been blown out of proportion- but bare in mind- that those hurt worst by it are the younger children.

I want my kids to get the vaccine-I'm not scared of the swine flu- figure everyone will have it eventually... It will mutate and stay in the population for generations now it's out- and it doesn't seem to be the worst flu ever.

... but, nonetheless, I want my kids protected from it if they can be- if it saves a slight chance at turning bad... and so that they don't have to go through it.

you know, I wouldn't have a problem with getting my kids vaccinated, even if I thought it was pointless, but what scares me is that I have seen no evidence that the vaccine is SAFE for children. What are the side effects? What are the risks? this is what concerns me the most. From what I understand, it hasn't been tested enough to know if it's safe. is that wrong or right?

There is no great risk, and potentially some good, from getting the oral H1N1 treatment. A little squirt of liquid to avoid a nasty strain of the flu--why not? School age children are particularly at risk as this is the main strain of flu they will be susceptable to this winter. Also if most people (i.e. less than 80%) do not get vaccinated there is a much higher chance of the strain mutating into something far more dangerous--and this is based on a flu that already hits kids more and gets deeper into their lungs thah past flus.

The vaccine has undergone safety testing. Before criticising the validity of those tests, perhaps you should go to the CDC website and see what they are. I think even fast-tracked testing is quite enough to satisfy me that the vaccines are safe to use on our kids.

I just no longer trust my government, period. It seems my public servants (congressmen, senators even local public servants such as the mayor) constantly go against my wishes, my families wishes, and most of my friends wishes. I certainly would not trust them in this area. You have pointed out one red flag, "Why the heck are they spreading so much fear over a flu which is no more deadly than the run of the mill flu we have every year?"

"They" need to be more concerned over rising cancer rates, rising autism rates, etc.

I fear crooks now run big government, BIG medicine and big business. I was hoping Obama could change some of this; I am still waiting.

Regards,
TA

ok please don't have this turn into a pointing fingers criticizing thread. I wasn't criticizing the validity, I was saying I hadn't heard one way or another if they were safe.

It seems simple to me. Flu is dangerous for kids, H1N1 is even more dangerous. Vaccinated kids are far, far less likely to get the flu. The vaccinations are safe in theory and now proving safe in practice (10,000s of does so far, no significsnt negative reactions).

I am having trouble thing of a reason for a sinister government conspiracy involving tainted vaccines that only have bad effects after some time delaye of months or more. the reason we don't lose kids to epidemics is because we vaccinate them and an oral vaccine isn't even painful.
