Okay so right now I have gravel substrate and the color layer on the gravel is starting to peel off and I'm afraid one of my fish will ingest it and it would kill them. So I was thinking if it would be a good idea to change it to sand... The worry I have is if this transition will stress out or even kill the fish that are currently in the tank? Any advice?

Are you running UGF or RUGF? If not gravel vac deep and change over all at once.

No its not a UGF. I'm a newbie to the whole slang still so I donno what RUGF is. But changing the substrate from gravel to sand would be ok?

RUGF= reverse flow undergravel filter, I believe. You can change out the substrate. I would consider leaving a small layer of the gravel under the sand as sand tend to compact. Leaving some gravel would allow for spaces and less compaction of the sand.
