I have a aqua c remora on the way this week for my 29 and I also happen to have an old Aquaclear 110 HOB filter that I would like to mod to make a fuge. Since I will have the skimmer would it be pointless to have the fuge as well? I mainly want the fuge to keep chaeto to get nitrates down so would both of these be good for that together?

They aren't necessarily exclusive of each other, though the skimmer will slow 'pod production, etc. in the refugium, since it will be removing particulates. Macroalgal growth won't necessarily be affected, though.

growing macro removes nitrates and skimming removes disolved organics which will later become nitrates, skimmed tanks dont always have 0 nitrates though and using both will keep your nitrates lower than either one alone
