Any substrate is fine as java ferns are not planted in the substrate. You have to make sure their rhizome is above the substrate. Most tie it to either rocks or wood instead of planting it.

You really can use any substrate you like. Swords you plant into the substrate. Just use root tabs fertilizer as they get most of their nutrition from the substrate. I have swords in straight gravel and they grow great. You will also find members here who have them in sand, eco-complete, flourite, etc. So really it is just what you like.
