Carefully directed flow can help out tremendously along with siphoning the surface during regular water changes.

Gravel vacuuming along with water changes gets out the waste (fish poop, food, etc.). This should be done in freshwater tanks and brackish tanks. Even if the cories eat the food off the bottom of your freshwater tank, you should still do gravel vacuumings to pick up the fish poop and stuff that the cories don't get. Quite often, stuff falls into the gravel bed and needs to be thoroughly vacuumed to actually get it out.
