i have a 29 g tank with shop light over it it has 2- 48 inch 20 watts florecent bulbs 40 watts total a dark alge is forming in the center of the subtrate pea gravel on the outer edge there is no alge could the lights be too close to the water surface is there a certain distance that i should keep it from the water ?thanks for anyones input

depends on the tyep of algae....but lighting can generally be right on top of the tank less than 1" above the water to 4.5" above the water. depends on personal preference amongst other variables.
