from the humane society. she is a great cat and gentle with the kids. I am trying to introduce her to my dog. I have had a lot of cats before, but not with this dog. We are going very slowly because the dog is hyperactive and has some prey instinct. Good thing is she has been through a lot of training and the cat did live with a dog before. She is in a room by herself and I have introduce them for short periods of time with treats and such. Any advice?

It sounds like you are doing it right. That's a beautiful cat! I did this process in reverse with a 7 year old cat and a new dog. There was a lot of hissing and spitting, but they got the territories straightened out and they're the best of friends now. Hopefully that will happen with your two. Just don't leave them together unsupervised for a while. I know that there is an animal behavorist that is on the boards-- maybe he/she will have some good advice.

Yes, I hope it will work out. I did have one other cat a long time ago and the only reason it didn't go well was because she was elderly and crabby and would stare the dog down and atttack her eyes. So this cat I am hoping is different temperament; she was a momma cat and only has half a tail from frost bite (which is good so the kids won't get it caught in doors).

Yes, they are getting along better tonight. Had the dog on the leash in the same room and the cat is fine as long as she doesn't get in her face. Also, I just have to correct the dog as soon as she perks her ears up and stares at the cat, that way she understands that she is not allowed to fixate on her.

You are going about it just the right way. Having then in separate rooms to begin with and gradually more time together. Just be patient :)

Your on the right track! The biggest problem IMO is that when they first meet, the dogs instinct is the chase and go after the cat to see if it will submit. but all the cat wants to do is run away. this will not help with the chase. Also, when a dog wants to submit, it will lay down belly up. While when cats fight, the dominant one with go belly up, a sign of dominance. so its like night and day!
eventually, everything will work out. just give it time.
