That is very interesting. I'm guessing it's a genetic mutation, maybe a partially present Y chromosome.
She's very pretty!

Could it be anything similar to the gene that gave males the long fins? Somewhere it had to show up since the wild males have short fins, so is it safe to assume that it is still possible for a female to get that gene and have long fins too?
I'm not an expert on betta genetics, but I'm just taking a stab. Also, very nice betta! I'd love to have a long finned female betta! So if you ever breed her and get long finned female babies I'm in! I'd definitely buy one of those!

How interesting. I've never seen a long finned female before. If I were to see those in a fish store I probably would just pass them by thinking that they were males before having a closer look.

How sure are you that it is a female? Just because it was labeled that way in the LFS doesn't make it correct.
If it is a female then that is quite a nice one, the coloring is very vibrant as well.

Males don't have the vertical bars, this one does.

Personally I wouldn't want long finned females if I was breeding Bettas. It would mean having to separate every single individual, since the norm is to separate out males when they start showing long finnage. Btw vertical barring isn't what I would use to ascertain sex. Longitudinal stripes are how to differentiate a colorful female from a short-fined male.

Hi All
Death Pony many, many males have vertical barring. The barring comes out when the fish is either very excited or under stress.
SubRosa longitudinal stripes are also observed on both sexes.
The only real way of telling males and females apart is by observing the underbelly of the individual in question. Female Bettas have an ovipository tube that can be seen as a little white speck between the anal fin and the ventrals.
Oh yeah and by the way very cool female. Nice vid of them in mid spawn. Hope you get some really nice long-finned females from them.

I sorta have a long finned female. She just suddenly got long fins at about 8 months old after being an ordinary female..

Actually, males can sometimes have false ovipostitors, so that's not a definite there either. Generally in iffy bettas you can find enough traits one way or another to tell, but sometimes all you can do is guess.

I had a gorgeous longfinned female with blue/green/silver, but she died one morning.
