'Cockroaches, Blood And Mice Found In KFC'

11:53am UK, Thursday October 29, 2009
Alex Watts, Sky News Online
Kentucky Fried Chicken is being prosecuted after environmental health inspectors found cockroaches, mice and flies at one of its busiest restaurants in Britain.

Officials said a cockroach scurried across a counter when they visited the fast food outlet in Leicester Square, central London.

They claimed a mouse was seen running across the floor and flies buzzed around their heads at the Coventry Street premises.
Inspectors also recorded evidence of black sticky grease caking bread roll containers and trays of raw chicken.

They claimed dirty cloths were used to wipe food preparation surfaces, chicken racks were covered in congealed fat and food warming units were dirty.

Officials also alleged a one-metre pool of dried blood was found on the floor and deeply-engrained grime covered walls and shelves.
Mould and dirt was found on the floor of the food preparation room and on walls, doors and ceilings, they claimed.

"As soon as we were made aware of the results... we took immediate action to bring the restaurant back up to our strict hygiene standards. The restaurant is being closely monitored to ensure that they are maintained."
A spokesman for KFC

KFC, based in Goldsworth Road, Surrey, is being prosecuted by City of Westminster Council. The allegations against the branch were outlined in court documents presented at City of Westminster Magistrates Court. Other charges related to mayonnaise stored at warm temperatures, food wrappers left on the floor, a lack of hygienic facilities for handwashing and a pile of 14 bags of rubbish left leaking liquid on to the floor. The fast food chain faced 13 charges brought under food hygiene regulations following an inspection on August 15 last year.

A court official said KFC pleaded not guilty to all 13 charges and a case management hearing would be held on February 22. A spokesman for KFC said: "As soon as we were made aware of the results of the EHO (environmental health officer) inspection... we took immediate action to bring the restaurant back up to our strict hygiene standards.
"The restaurant is being closely monitored to ensure that they are maintained."

They fail to mention that KFC is a franchise as that it is the Franchisee's responsibility to ensure cleanliness and proper health standards. lthough KFC corporate should have been watching and monitoring but these issues are not necessarily KFCs fault. (note: if this is a company operated store ignore this comment)

also, since when did you crazy brits spell MOLD with a U???? mould? seriously?

It's our langouage Couach- we invented it- we can dou with it as we please! ;)

Never liked KFC anyway- a few years back went by and though... "Oh I haven't tried KFC in a decade- I wonder if they're any better yet..."

That was a few years ago... still haven't considered going back again.

Of all the good places to pick up fried chicken- KFC is not one of them. Disgusting, over-salty and... nasty.

... but of course that's just an opinion. ;)

Coach there is no KFC corporate per se, the franchise rights to the name are owned by a company that operates under the name YUM which also owns Pizza Hut, Taco Bell, Long John Silver's as well as A&W. I do have to agree that it is the responsibility of the franchisee to maintain proper hygiene. From reading the posted exert it looks as though the store is still operational so the hygiene must have not been THAT bad.

I think I am gonna be sick....

The thing that gets me, is when I worked in the restaurant industry (I have been cook, waitress, bartender, hostess) my thought always was - if I won't serve it to my self or my family, I won't serve it to my customers. Did these people ever eat at their own workplace? I know when I worked 8 hour shifts I usually had one meal at work. So, the people working there were dining in this filth also, with no urge to clean it up.... GAWD.

Kentucky Fried Cockroach?

Solves two problems at once-

1) get's rid of the cockroaches.
2) a healthier, tastier alternative to Kentuck Fried Chicken.

Talking about Terminex... What ever happened to the termites found in Devon- remember reading about someone finding termites in Devon. Have there been any more termite sightings in Britain since- or was that a one off?

I used to work in Food Chemistry. It's amazing how many rodent hairs or insect parts you're ALLOWED to find in food.
